In the second round...!

In the second round…….!

You are the perfect vessel!

The twelve disciples went through a short but intensive mentorship programme with the Master. They experienced a personal touch of the Master Himself. He taught them to forgive, to serve, to trust and to be humble. He taught them how to love their enemies and how to believe God for the impossible; they saw practicable faith in practice. He delegated them the authority to cast out demons, to heal the sick and raise the dead. He equipped them for the ministry and for the time He was not going to be present. After what seemed to be a great and successful development programme disaster struck on the graduation evening! At the very moment they were supposed demonstrate their first show of faith and courage; that fateful evening when the High Priests came to arrest Jesus – the whole class of disciples fled. They did not run away and hide behind the bushes (except for Peter). So dismal and embarrassing was the failure of the programme to the extent that the great majority of these men went back to their professions; they went back to their nets! They forgot that they were carrying the mandate to save the world; they forgot that they had sat at the feet of the greatest teacher; and they forgot that they had forsaken their own lives for such a time as this. They were failures and a disappointment! But the Master did not give up on them. When He chose them originally, He knew their frames and weaknesses as the Creator would! He did not choose perfect men to carry out His mandate! He chose men that were susceptible to failure! It doesn’t matter what your past failures were or what your weaknesses are; you are the perfect vessel to carry the greatness mandate!

In second round!

In the second round He came and endued them with the power from on high (Acts 1 v 8); He baptized them with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2). Suddenly they realized who they were and what was in them! In the second round they suddenly realized the power which was at work within them. They realized they were no ordinary men. You can’t be ordinary when you carry an extra-ordinary God in you! In a turn of events their understanding of who they were brought new courage and boldness in them! They stood against opposition. They endured resistance to the point of cruel death! Not even the threat of death could dissuade them from their mission; and today, more than 2000 years later, all around us are signs and testimonies of the great work of the men and women who were deemed failures in the first round. In the second round they emerged stronger! Don’t look at your failures or weaknesses; in the second round you can emerge stronger, if only you can acknowledge and understand the might power that is at work within you. You can rise again! Though they might have capitalized on your weaknesses in the first round and pulled you down; in the second round you can rise up to your victory. All the resources you need for your victory are in you! Tell your enemies you are coming back again…………this time much stronger…..the second round is yours!!

The Twelve Ordinary men

The twelve Ordinary men

A friend of mine recently blessed me with a great book entitled Twelve Ordinary Men. The book is about the twelve men that Jesus Christ selected as His disciples. The twelve were an amazing selection from the greatest Man to ever walk on this earth; the Man who had all the options open to Him as to whom He could choose to be on His team. He could choose from the class of intellectual Sadducees; or from the top religious sages among the Jews; or from the affluent and wealthy citizens. He had them all at His disposal! But with all the options He had, He selected ordinary men; among them a handful of common fishermen, a hated tax collector, and an impulsive political zealot. They weren’t saints, scholars nor religious sages but plain simple and common citizens. The men were ordinary; hopelessly human and remarkably unremarkable! What made the difference is that they were obedient to the Master’s call and yielded to the Master’s touch. It is amazing what you can achieve through obedience; simple obedience to the Master’s call! Obeying your call may mean trading your position, money and comfort for something less glamorous; it may mean going against the tide and being misunderstood by your peers, colleagues and friends; it may not make sense to anybody else; but in the end that is what will define a life well lived: a purpose-driven life and the reward is grandiose! Through obedience to the Master’s call and obedience to their calling and purpose the twelve ordinary men were transformed to become a force that forever changed the world, the history and the fate of mankind. Are you following your call and your purpose for life? Are you walking in obedience?

If you don’t make a difference; then you don’t matter!

Its time for a revival!

Its time for a revival!

The marriage mystery!

At a recent wedding anniversary I attended the speeches I heard from different speakers got me thinking long and hard about the mystery of the marriage institution. Marriage is an institution where two people (of course, of opposite genders) who love each other decide to be joined together in holy matrimony. Their love is so deep (judging from my own experience) that sometimes it’s so painful to spend a day without communicating or seeing the other partner. However, after that great wedding day, all the years to come are spent trying to learn how to talk to each other; learning how to share finances and other resources; how to be patient with each; and so on goes the list. In fact thousands of books have been written on the subject to teach the people that love each other how to love each other. Anniversary after anniversary become a celebration of the miracle that the couple has made it another year while still together. It’s the mystery of marriage. In a perfect world, if people get married because they love each other, they won’t need lessons on how to talk to each other or how to be patient with each other – it will be natural. In a perfect world, time would not cause a married couple to grow apart, but would only strengthen their oneness; as is with our relationship with God, where time is ‘changing us into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord’ (2 Corinthians 3 v 18) and so must be our marital relationships. Wedding anniversaries must cease to be a celebration of the survival of the marriages but be a celebration of the blessing of God that has transformed the couple from glory to glory in their love. May the married couples out there remember their first love; revive it; and remember that marriage was instituted to be enjoyed and not to be endured! May we begin a marriage revival that makes the marriage institution better and sweeter with time as we get transformed from glory to glory, Amen! Revive your former love!

Revive your dreams!

Some years back when I resigned from the mining company I used to work for my 76 year old grand-mom sat me down. She didn’t want me to leave! She wanted me to stay on because someday I may be able to take-over ownership of the mine. I dismissed her reasoning as old age folly. But now, years later, I realize that such stuff is what real dreams are made of. The ability to think the unthinkable! If your dream is not so big as to sound like madness or scary then it’s not good enough. The dreams of Joseph (Genesis 37), the small boy, standing while his parents and brothers did obeisance to him were completely unthinkable and unimaginable; the thought of Sarah getting pregnant at the age of 80 made even herself to laugh; the imagination of the Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville) to get a man floating in the air on a heavy piece of metal sounded like folly to their peers; such is the stuff that makes up dreams that transform generations. If you were beginning to think that your dreams are folly; think again! Its time to revive those dreams!

Revive the child in you

Sometimes to revive those great dreams you need to revive the child in you. Just take a few moments to think of some of the great qualities you used to possess as a child:

No Limit thinking: as a child my ambition was to be a pilot and a great scientist. I believed with my whole heart that I was going to achieve my ambitions. As I grew older I began to convince myself of why it can’t be done. In your childlike attitude you knew no limits or boundaries of what can be achieved in life; your creativity and imagination was unfettered; your dreams were ambitious and great! Now your adult reasoning has erected invisible fences and boundaries of what can and what cannot be achieved. Your education has taught you to confine your thinking to fit the in square or the box. You believed you will be a great international preacher who will traverse the globe; you believed you were destined to be a great speaker; a great banker; or even may be the President; but now, what? You have resigned to fate! But I want you to know that your mind knows no boundaries except only those that you acknowledge. It’s all in your hands, you can revive the child-like no limit thinking!

See people as they are: As a child my relationships and friendships were not based on social or economic status; but I could see past the trappings of material success to the core of the people. ‘God is who Himself is not a respecter of persons’ (Acts 10 v 34) says, ‘you shall not respect persons in judgment: you shall hear the small as well as the great’ (Deuteronomy 1 v 17).  Labeling is disabling! Stop labeling people before you can relate with them. Respect people for who they are and not for what they have!

Fun, laughter and enthusiasm: When is the last time you had a hearty laughter? When you were a child you stayed healthy because you played hard and worked hard; and now you take yourself so seriously that you are almost a heart-attack waiting to happen. Relax, take it easy and have fun!   Even God would take time to take ‘a walk in the park (garden) in the cool of the day’ (Genesis 3 v 8); and He took time to ‘rest on the seventh day from all his work which he had made’ (Genesis 2 v 2). You need a break; and have a good laugh too!

God bless you as revive the child in you.

If it's lonely at the top; it's because you didn't bring somebody along!

If it’s lonely at the top; it’s because you didn’t bring somebody along

Happy Mothers’ Day

Do you realise that you are a product of where you live or where you grow up? What you are exposed to eventually shapes up your paradigms and perceptions. That is why I deliberately maintain a consistent battle against limiting paradigms that are imposed on me by my environments. Having grown up in the poor African suburbs of Harare I was never taught how to verbally express love especially to members of my immediate family – in particular parents. What I know I had to learn it in bits and pieces from various other environments. You can see my challenge when I have to teach my own children the things that I was never taught as a child; or perhaps my children to remind me what I was never taught! My daughter reminded me this weekend that we have to do a surprise thing for their mom (my wife) for mother’s day and I immediately concurred that it was a great idea. She suggested among other things that we also buy a bunch of flowers; which I also thought was a good idea. So I managed to sneak out to the shops with my daughter for the secret ‘Mother’s Day’ agenda. When we got into the shop I got a great idea. In my ancient wisdom I decided that we should buy a potted rose flower plant. That will solve my problem for many years to come. That means I don’t have to remember to buy flowers all the time. We’ll plant the rose flower plant and hopefully it will grow. Every other anniversary or commemoration my wife will just have to go and pick the flowers from the plant as a reminder that I love her forever! My problem solved; how’s that?

To all the mothers out there I wish you a belated happy Mothers’ Day. You are special! By the way I remembered to call my own mom and verbally appreciated her for being the special woman she is!

There is no one who is larger than life!

Apart from the hectic schedule of my day job which included a lot of travel; I had a packed diary to fulfill over the past couple of weeks. I had three or so invitations from various congregations to speak; I led a wedding anniversary celebration for our close friends; I spoke at a team building session for the teachers from one of the local junior secondary schools; I had a few coaching and counseling sessions with different individuals and families on a variety of issues; and the list goes on. After such a roller coaster jam-packed period you begin to feel the fatigue in all your systems and want some refreshment. When you get used to being the one speaking all the time and everyone listening to you; it’s easy to fall into the trap of giving out and never get time to sit back and receive; the trap of developing an over-sized head where you will not listen to anybody else except yourself. When Elijah had done exploits he began to feel the same; he began to feel that he was the only true prophet of God remaining and he said unto God, ‘the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down your altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away’ (1 Kings 19 v 14); but God answered him and said, ‘I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him’ (1 Kings 19 v 18). Whatever gift or calling you have in life you should always remember that you have your part to play in the greater script of the story of the plan of God for mankind. You are not a sole actor! You will not play the whole script alone. There is no one who is larger than life. We all have a unique and distinct role to play on the stage of life. Play your part effectively and diligently and always remember that in everything that you do you will always need supporting players to help you through and to assist you when you get weary. Don’t isolate yourself and never let pride rule you. It may be your season to be on the front stage; but that does not mean those minor supporting players and those players in the backstage awaiting their turn are less important. Never let success get into your head. If it’s your season utilize it earnestly, diligently and humbly for soon the curtain will close on you for the next chapter to begin.  At the end of it all you want to be able to tell a story that says ‘I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: (2 Timothy 4 v 7 – 8).

Bring somebody along!

We all dream of success and want to be able to write great success stories of our lives. But one of the greatest challenges of success, whether as a team-leader, pastor, intellectual or  entrepreneur, is that when you are at the battlefront people think that you have it all worked out. You will not easily find someone who can advise you boldly or encourage you when you need it the most; because everybody thinks you have supernatural strength to pull through. You have heard people say that ‘it’s lonely at the top!’ It’s simply because when you are up there you can only look down to everybody else. The key to sustained success is to make sure that as you go up to the top you take someone up along with you; whom you will turn to when it begins to get lonely or tough – because it surely can get lonely and tough at the top! Always have around you somebody who can speak candidly and bluntly into your life; you will need them – Moses had Jethro; David had Nathan; Timothy had Paul; who can rebuke you frankly when you are slipping up; who can honestly encourage you when you are down. Don’t fall into the trap of enjoying the comfort of being the giant among the dwarfs – who will scratch your back in a time of need! You need somebody who can look you in the face and tell it as it is. As you rise up to the top be sure to bring somebody along.

Why disqualify yourself!

Why disqualify yourself!

Nothing to lose!

A few months back I was invited by a small group of employees to speak to them and boost their morale on the project they were working on. It was a group of fairly low level employees. During the course of the talk I asked a simple question. I asked how many of them would apply if the position of the General Manager of the company were to be advertised. The response was fairly predictable. None of them said they would apply! I asked them why they would not apply. They did not have any specific reason apart from the feeling that they were obviously not qualified for the job. I further asked them what they would lose if they were to apply and get rejected. Nothing! You don’t lose anything if you are not considered; but ‘never disqualify yourself on your own!’ I don’t mean you should do something unreasonable but why not make an attempt at something big and scary; that big hairy do! After-all the greatest rewards come from the greatest risks!

Why disqualify yourself prematurely!

Many people lose opportunities in life because they disqualify themselves prematurely. They look at themselves and convince themselves that they are not the material to do great things. When David went to the battlefront to bring food to his brothers he was surprised why all the experienced war veterans were disqualifying themselves before Goliath; and he volunteered to take on the giant. Saul tried to disqualify him on the basis of age and experience and said ‘you are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth’ (1 Samuel 17 v 33); but David refused to be discouraged! He narrated how his basic experience with the lions and bears had prepared him for such an opportune moment as this. The experiences you have been through in life were not in vain! They were meant to prepare you for the opportune moments. When the opportunity presents itself don’t disqualify yourself! David had nothing to lose if he had lost the battle against the Goliath because he was the underdog in the fight; but he had everything to win if he succeeded. Before you quit, pull out of the race or disqualify yourself consider first what you have to lose if you were to fail – in most cases you have nothing to lose if you fail but everything to gain if you were to succeed. A friend of mine disqualified herself from applying for an execute position in her field saying that she needed to consolidate in her current position first; only to blame herself later when her subordinate (her junior by far) got the position. She blamed herself for having disqualified herself prematurely! Another friend of mine tendered for a multi-million project even though he was just a small player in the industry. He told me the great news of that he had won the tender and is now working out how he will deliver the service. He did not disqualify himself prematurely and now he can celebrate all the way to the bank!

Unlock the gem within

When David built his great army, he did not go and recruit the experienced army generals and commanders; but he went out to the dark alleys and the back streets and ‘collected around him every one in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one of embittered spirit; and he became a captain over them; and there were with him about four hundred men’ (1 Samuel 22 v 2). I work in a diamond mine. My job is to mine dirt and stones and process them to extract diamond. Unprocessed stones (ore) look so common and valueless until they come out of the processing plant where they are turned into the most precious commodity in the world. The fact that the unprocessed stones look so common and valueless does not mean that there is no value locked in their cores; their centre. The untrained eye would throw the dirt away; but the expert eyes of the geologists and mining engineers identify the uncommon value and unlock the gem within. David did the same to the worthless men. He had an eye to see the gem that lay at the core of those embittered men and women. He collected them, gave them confidence, raised their self-esteem and made them realize that the greatest of the diamonds in this world are not found in the mines of this earth but in the minds of people of this earth. In turn these man ‘helped David in his expeditions; for they were all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host’ (1 Chronicles 12 v 21).

There something of uncommon value at your core!

Real mighty men and women are not those born with might; nor those made mighty by others; but those that realize the gems that are hidden at their core and rise up to exploit them and create mightiness out of their own lives; those that exploit their experiences to fearlessly conquer the giants of opportunities  that lie ahead of them. There is uncommon value in you. It doesn’t matter what anybody else may say. At the very core of your life is a gem that needs to be unlocked and you have the key! Don’t let bitterness, debt, lack of education or your position at work hold you back! You may look ordinary or common; but there is something of uncommon value in you that needs to be unlocked. ‘But you have this treasure in earthen vessels that the surpassingness of the power may be of God, and not from you:’ (2 Corinthians 4 v 7)

The choice is yours!

The choice is yours: to growl with the wolves and complain to everybody else about your misery, your situation and why you are the unlucky one; or to fly with the eagles and take your destiny into your own hands in Christ. I know what I want, do you?

Why disqualify yourself?
