Why disqualify yourself!

Why disqualify yourself!

Nothing to lose!

A few months back I was invited by a small group of employees to speak to them and boost their morale on the project they were working on. It was a group of fairly low level employees. During the course of the talk I asked a simple question. I asked how many of them would apply if the position of the General Manager of the company were to be advertised. The response was fairly predictable. None of them said they would apply! I asked them why they would not apply. They did not have any specific reason apart from the feeling that they were obviously not qualified for the job. I further asked them what they would lose if they were to apply and get rejected. Nothing! You don’t lose anything if you are not considered; but ‘never disqualify yourself on your own!’ I don’t mean you should do something unreasonable but why not make an attempt at something big and scary; that big hairy do! After-all the greatest rewards come from the greatest risks!

Why disqualify yourself prematurely!

Many people lose opportunities in life because they disqualify themselves prematurely. They look at themselves and convince themselves that they are not the material to do great things. When David went to the battlefront to bring food to his brothers he was surprised why all the experienced war veterans were disqualifying themselves before Goliath; and he volunteered to take on the giant. Saul tried to disqualify him on the basis of age and experience and said ‘you are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth’ (1 Samuel 17 v 33); but David refused to be discouraged! He narrated how his basic experience with the lions and bears had prepared him for such an opportune moment as this. The experiences you have been through in life were not in vain! They were meant to prepare you for the opportune moments. When the opportunity presents itself don’t disqualify yourself! David had nothing to lose if he had lost the battle against the Goliath because he was the underdog in the fight; but he had everything to win if he succeeded. Before you quit, pull out of the race or disqualify yourself consider first what you have to lose if you were to fail – in most cases you have nothing to lose if you fail but everything to gain if you were to succeed. A friend of mine disqualified herself from applying for an execute position in her field saying that she needed to consolidate in her current position first; only to blame herself later when her subordinate (her junior by far) got the position. She blamed herself for having disqualified herself prematurely! Another friend of mine tendered for a multi-million project even though he was just a small player in the industry. He told me the great news of that he had won the tender and is now working out how he will deliver the service. He did not disqualify himself prematurely and now he can celebrate all the way to the bank!

Unlock the gem within

When David built his great army, he did not go and recruit the experienced army generals and commanders; but he went out to the dark alleys and the back streets and ‘collected around him every one in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one of embittered spirit; and he became a captain over them; and there were with him about four hundred men’ (1 Samuel 22 v 2). I work in a diamond mine. My job is to mine dirt and stones and process them to extract diamond. Unprocessed stones (ore) look so common and valueless until they come out of the processing plant where they are turned into the most precious commodity in the world. The fact that the unprocessed stones look so common and valueless does not mean that there is no value locked in their cores; their centre. The untrained eye would throw the dirt away; but the expert eyes of the geologists and mining engineers identify the uncommon value and unlock the gem within. David did the same to the worthless men. He had an eye to see the gem that lay at the core of those embittered men and women. He collected them, gave them confidence, raised their self-esteem and made them realize that the greatest of the diamonds in this world are not found in the mines of this earth but in the minds of people of this earth. In turn these man ‘helped David in his expeditions; for they were all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host’ (1 Chronicles 12 v 21).

There something of uncommon value at your core!

Real mighty men and women are not those born with might; nor those made mighty by others; but those that realize the gems that are hidden at their core and rise up to exploit them and create mightiness out of their own lives; those that exploit their experiences to fearlessly conquer the giants of opportunities  that lie ahead of them. There is uncommon value in you. It doesn’t matter what anybody else may say. At the very core of your life is a gem that needs to be unlocked and you have the key! Don’t let bitterness, debt, lack of education or your position at work hold you back! You may look ordinary or common; but there is something of uncommon value in you that needs to be unlocked. ‘But you have this treasure in earthen vessels that the surpassingness of the power may be of God, and not from you:’ (2 Corinthians 4 v 7)

The choice is yours!

The choice is yours: to growl with the wolves and complain to everybody else about your misery, your situation and why you are the unlucky one; or to fly with the eagles and take your destiny into your own hands in Christ. I know what I want, do you?

Why disqualify yourself?

Don't just walk out!

Don’t just walk out!

Don’t make important decisions out of emotion!

A couple of years back I went through a rough season with one of my bosses for no apparent reason. He treated me unfairly and would make decisions with my subordinates; decisions that would override my decisions even though I was the section head. It was a difficult and painful period! During that exact same period I got another job with a different company and the perks were decent. This was going to be my best chance to get out of the frustrating work environment; but I decided to turn down the job offer! You never make the most important decisions of your life during a period of high emotions and frustrations because you may not be in the right state to make the best judgment; and you should never get into the habit of running away from challenges and problems because you can never conquer what you will not confront! I stuck around to resolve issues with the boss and in due season God came through.

The easiest way is to just walk out – but not always the best way out!

As long as you live you are definitely bound to meet some challenges and difficulties in different aspects of your life. Many times over I speak to men and women who are hurting because of the experiences in their marriages; men and women who are hurting and are feeling enough is enough and are ready to walk out! In my ten years of marriage to my beautiful and lovely wife we have had our fair share of painful and difficult moments; moments of tears and frustration, but as ‘iron sharpens iron; so a spouse sharpens his spouse’s countenance’ (Proverbs 27 v 17). The challenging moments helped chiesel us into a perfect fit; an inseparable entity, like pieces of a jig-saw puzzle, where we are only suitable for each other and nobody else. The easiest way out of any painful relationship or situation is to walk out; but if you teach yourself to walk out – you will always walk out for the rest of your life.  Grasshoppers don’t eat grapes because they will always hop at the slightest blow of wind. I am praying for a generation that will rise up, roll their sleeves up and pick up a fight against the devil to defend their marriages and relationships; a generation that will declare that they will not assist the devil to destroy their own families. I am praying for a generation that has the power of stickability – a generation that will not be shaken by the storms of life; but a generation that will drive through the storm and not park by the wayside. The season of sunshine belongs to those that have endured that hard drive through the storm and resisted the temptation to park on the wayside; but drove through until they reach the sunshine end!

Even if the peak disappears from sight its still there!

One time when I attempted to climb to the peak of Mount Inyangani, I notice that when I was still a distance away from the mountain I could easily see the mountain peak. But the moment I got to the mountain itself and began the climb I could no longer see the peak. The trees, shrubs and the boulders distracted me from seeing the peak. But because I was determined to make it the invisibility of the peak did not distract me from my goal of reaching the top. It’s easy to visualize what you want to achieve in life or to visualize your dreams and visions clearly before you begin to embark on them. The moment you begin the journey the peak becomes invisible. It’s easy to be caught up in the thick of thin things and be distracted from your ultimate goal. If you have begun on the journey of your dreams but the peak seems to have disappeared – just keep going! The fact that you can’t see the peak does not mean that its no longer there! The fact that you can’t see clearly the ultimate goal of what you set to achieve does not mean that those goals have disappeared. Stay focused and keep going! Don’t throw in the towel easily. I have friends that quit their jobs not because it was the right time or the right thing to do but simply because they had been frustrated by their bosses or they could no longer see their future clearly – don’t let the shrubs and trees on the way distract your sight of the peak and discourage you from enduring the climb – just keep going!

Rein your emotions!

If you are going to make any important decisions in your life whatsoever make sure you are not in a period of emotion! Don’t make important decisions when you are too excited or when you are very frustrated. Don’t make pledges when you are too excited! I am reminded of Jephthah who in a time of an emotional high; in a moment of great excitement made a vow unto the Lord and said, ‘If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands, Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering’ (Judges 11 v 30 – 31).  He paid a great price for the vow; he paid with the life of his daughter because when he ‘came to Mizpeh unto his house, behold his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter’ (Judges 11 v 34). Important decisions of your life require you to be sober!

May the Lord bless you with the sobriety and stickability that befits a champion!

You have no excuse!

You have no excuse

If he’s done it; you have no excuse!

Sometime in the middle of last year I was invited to talk at a breakfast meeting organized by one of the men’s fellowships. In attendance was one young man who loves the Lord very much. This young man is living with a disability. He is paralyzed the greater part of his body and is therefore confined to the wheelchair. When he is not in the wheelchair he is in bed because he has to be assisted in all his movements. As I have gotten to know him more I have learnt one thing peculiar about this young man; he brings the truth in that old adage that says ‘disability is not inability’. From the time he listened to me he became a greater follower of my writings and my messages and each time when we speak he enjoys quoting me. When I spoke on that breakfast meeting he bought a copy of my book and he said to me that he wanted to write a book of his own. I didn’t believe he meant it; but he was determined! He read the book and he quotes from it quite regularly. As I write, right now, I am in the process of proof-reading an over 100 page long script he wrote entitled ‘Ultimate Success’ in preparation for publishing. The script is so long that it has to be split into two books. This is by a young man whose life juggles between a wheelchair and a bed; and does not have control of the greater part of his body and limbs. He sends me weekly inspirational quotes on my mobile phone. When I visit him he won’t let me go without reading the bible and him sharing an encouragement. He can’t lift the bible so I get his bible in my hand and he tells me from memory the passages I should read; and his citations are accurate. Amazing! He does not mourn for what he doesn’t have; but celebrates what he has. He does not seek sympathy for his disability; but exploits his abilities. This is the kind of “I can do it’ attitude that inspires me. You have no excuse for not rising up to your calling; or for not exploiting your potential.

I need the audible voice

I have learnt that sometimes God has a way of keeping so quiet especially at the very point when you need Him the most to say something. Many times in life we are subjected to situations when we have to make critical decisions; a decision to marry someone; a decision to change locations; a decision whether or not to make a huge investment e.g. buying a property; or a decision to change jobs. People may give you all the advice and counsel but at the end of the day you have to make the ultimate call. It’s in such times that we all yearn for that supernatural audible voice from the skies that just tells us the choice to take. It’s at such times that we all wish we had the benefit of foresight – the ability to see ahead of time and see where the choice we are about to make  will take us to in the next few years. Fortunately or unfortunately at such times God maintains His silence. He maintains His silence not because He is not concerned – but because He wants you to trust Him. If you are about to make an important choice and you don’t know exactly what to do – spend time in prayer, believe God, trust your gut-feel and jump. Trust God and jump! He is faithful. As long as your decision is not out of selfish ambition He will never let you sink; ‘for he will give you into the care of his angels to keep you wherever you go. In their hands they will keep you up, so that your foot may not be crushed against a stone’ (Psalm 91 v 11 -12).

Fail forward!

You may be afraid of making a decision because you are afraid of failing. Even if you procrastinate you will still have to make the ultimate choice or decision at some stage; you may as well do it now! I have made many bad decisions in life and sometimes I lost big time in the process but that has never stopped me from making the next decision. I have always learnt to fail forward. The greatest wisdom you can ever have is to know that in life you can fall seven times but you must rise up eight times. The ultimate failure is when you stop trying after a failure. Each bad decision I have ever made has taught me what not to do again. So if you are in the valley of decision; decide and move on - whichever way! Let not your fear of failure; or your fear of the unknown hold you back from deciding! The greatest breakthroughs in life were made by those that rose beyond their fears; those that transcended their fears and defied their own logic; those that were determined to break the monotony of the status quo and explore the uncharted paths. Forget it if you ever want to be extraordinary but you continue walking the ordinary road!

Every choice involves a loss

Every choice you can ever make in life results in a loss. You can never make a choice and win everything. If you choose to marry so and so over the others; it means you loose everybody else who might have been on the list regardless of how much more handsome or beautiful they might have been.  There is no choice without a loss! The most important thing is to evaluate all your choices and ensure that with each choice you make you benefit more than what you are losing! Failing to make a choice will only trap you in the status quo! Nothing will ever move until you move. Don’t be trapped in indecisiveness; life is too short to spend the greater part of it in the valley of decision! You have no excuse for not making a choice! After-all many times you realize after you have gone through it all that what you feared all along was just a shadow!

May the Lord bless you and give you wisdom and boldness to make the right choices in your life and break the cycle of indecisiveness!

It's not about 'Bunny's' and chocolate eggs!

It’s not about ‘Bunny’s’ and chocolate eggs!

Watch your mouth; you never know who is listening!

I have just come back from a power-packed Annual National conference for the Assemblies of God churches in Botswana. It was a refreshing experience in which, I believe, a lot of things in line with my vision and mission for life were unlocked and confirmed! I also spoke in two of the workshop sessions of the conference. For me it was both humbling and exhilarating to be able to make an input into people’s lives on a national level. In one of my sessions when I was emphasizing on a point to encourage the delegates to read meaningfully, deeply and widely I made a couple of light-hearted references to one of the very popular cartoons from the local papers (of course not negative comments). Soon after the conference one of the delegates approached me for a chat and guess what; it was the cartoonist himself! We had a short and wonderful chat; and I laughed at myself for having gossiped the man in his presence! Next time watch your words for you never know who is listening!

Keep moving and keep serving faithfully

As we approached the Easter weekend I also witnessed the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s word which He spoke to me through different people at varying times many years ago. It’s true when He says, ‘the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry’ (Habakkuk 2 v 3). It’s easy to feel unfairly treated, ignored, abused or sidelined as you faithfully do your work. It’s easy to feel like quitting, giving up, slowing down or fighting back when it seems like nobody is noticing your efforts, your loyalty and your commitment.  Mordecai felt the same! Joseph felt the same! But when their season of remembrance came; they both had the last and the loudest laugh! I know I have said this many times over; but I will say it all the same – there is a special reward for faithfulness.  Faithfulness is not measured when you are handsomely rewarded for your input; but true faithfulness is measured by how much committed, loyal and diligent you continue to be in the face of adversity, unfairness or ill-treatment! You may not be seeing what the end will be like – but remain faithful and patiently wait for your season of remembrance.

It’s not about the Easter eggs!

In the past week I took sometime with my family to meditate on what Jesus Christ suffered on His last days on earth. We studied Isaiah 53. My wife took time to watch the movie, ‘The passion of the Christ’ with the employees just for them to appreciate the cruelty of the death He suffered. He was an innocent man! He had as much choice to refuse to go the way of the cross in same way we have a choice to refuse to wake up in the morning and go to work. But for the sake of what is at stake if we decide not to wake up; painfully as it might be, we find ourselves dragging ourselves drowsily out of bed. In the same way, when Christ saw what was at stake (your life and your salvation) if He did not go through the way of the cross; he decided to take the difficult choice - ‘He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed’ (Isaiah 53 v 5). Therefore you must always remember that Easter is not about the ‘bunny’ and the chocolate eggs – it’s about the death of a great and innocent man for the sake of our sins – Jesus Christ.

I have to go and rest from the long and active weekend and from the long drive back – stay blessed!
